How does a corp recogonize & pay tax on subscription revenue?
Q. Does the company owe tax on all the revenue collected even though those subscriptions haven't been fullfilled? So, assuming a calendar yr, if a customer subscribes in June (and pays upfront for 1 yr sub) does the co report the full revenue & owe tax on the entire amount or on just the 6 months that they've delivered isses. They still owe the subscribers six more months of issues. The co has only produced half of the issues, but the co has all of the customers subscription payments in the bank. How does the IRS recogonize this? Any software/subscription people out there?

A. A company would recognize income as the subscriptions were earned. Subscriptions paid in advance are recorded as deferred revenue which is really a liability to the company. Deferred revenue is moved into realized revenue accounts as the product is delivered. Prepaid subscriptions are and excellent source of cash, actually borrowed money, at no interest.
