A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.

The main types of social networking services are those which contain category divisions (such as former school-year or classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages) and a recommendation system linked to trust. Popular methods now combine many of these, with Facebook and Twitter widely used worldwide; MySpace and LinkedIn being the most widely used in North America; Nexopia (mostly in Canada); Bebo, Hi5, StudiVZ (mostly in Germany), iWiW (mostly in Hungary), Tuenti (mostly in Spain), Decayenne, Tagged, XING;, Badoo and Skyrock in parts of Europe; Orkut and Hi5 in South America and Central America; and Friendster, Mixi, Multiply, Orkut, Wretch, Xiaonei and Cyworld in Asia and the Pacific Islands and Orkut and Facebook in India.

There have been some attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests (see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative), but this has led to some concerns about privacy.

Have social networking site such as Myspace and Facebook rendered the high school class reunion obsolete?
Q. I've been out of high school for ten years now, and my reunion is coming up next month. However, with the advent of Facebook and Myspace, I keep in contact with the people I want to keep in contact with (and the few who are not on either site I see on a monthly basis anyway). With that premise in mind, with social networking sites all the rage, are high school class reunions obsolete?
Asked by Snoop - Mon Jul 14 19:48:04 2008 - - 4 Answers - 2 Comments

A. I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete. Besides, on these networking sites you can describe yourself any way you want. If you were the fat girl who always wanted to be the pretty, popular girl you can post some photoshopped pics of yourself. You can say that you are a successful lawyer, doctor, banker, businessperson, the list goes on. You can show a picture of yourself with some random hot girl and say that's your wife and put up pictures of your nieces and nephews and say they're your beautiful children. In other words, these sites offer the ability to bluff and raise the stakes of seeing one another in person. So yes, I think they are helping to make reunions obsolete. I also think that people don't tend to come back home… [cont.]

Do you believe that social networking sites like facebook can lead to sexual harassment?
Q. Social networking sites are also becoming dating sites...Dating sites are fast becoming an avenue where people meet from all corners of the world, but also poses problem on sexual harassment, especially to women... Is Facebook a venue where perverts can harass women users?
Asked by Donna B - Thu Dec 11 12:13:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Sexual harassment can become a major fact in any group.Whether it be Facebook,Multiply,Yahoo,M yspace and the list goes on.When it comes to social networking, one must be careful because there is a lot of sexual preditors out there who would prey on the innocent and those that oppose such content in their emails. We as a networking family can report sexual offense with the necessary documents or we can choose to ignore the comments that are being made by those that offends us.Thank God for the delete and ignore buttons on most groups.I have often hit those buttons on many occasions and/or removed that person from my friends list.
