File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to exchange and manipulate files over a TCP/IP based network, such as the Internet. FTP is built on a client-server architecture and utilizes separate control and data connections between the client and server applications. Client applications were originally interactive command-line tools with a standardized command syntax, but graphical user interfaces have been developed for all desktop operating systems in use today. FTP is also often used as an application component to automatically transfer files for program internal functions. FTP can be used with user-based password authentication or with anonymous user access. The Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is a similar, but simplified, not interoperable, and unauthenticated version of FTP.

Purpose

The objective of FTP, as outlined by its RFC, are:

  • To promote sharing of files (computer programs and/or data).
  • To encourage indirect or implicit use of remote computers.
  • To shield a user from variations in file storage systems among different hosts.
  • To transfer data reliably, and efficiently.

do you know anything about ftp (file transfer protocol) log-ins? i need to know?
Q. if i'm getting this right. if i have a master ftp log in it means i can log into my own site as the administrator etc...right? and then, if there are additional ftp log ins, these could be my clients or people who log in securely to my site, is this correct? i am window shopping for a good webhost and they give all these technical info if i mail them i'll have to sit here for days asking each individual one about their so called best deals...so i wonder if there are any smarties around this fine day? thanks! hi Acka, thanks, i did go through their sites, look here if you look under FTP all i wanted to know is...does this mean, i log in as the administrator and my clients can log in securely with their own passwords and username?

A. It depends if there is a webmaster account for the FTP site. If there is a webamaster account, then yes, there will be 2 logins, one has administratror rights (you) and one has webmaster rights (clients) - possibly. Not knowing what your clients will do, need to do, want etc, makes it difficult to give an answer. You don't need to email anyone, just google some webhosts, look at what they offer, compare prices. then sign up online. If you want your clients to log into your site - a blog or shop, then its not a webmaster ftp account you need, it will be a script on the site - perl/php whatever to provide secure access. Clients don't often access the ftp (unless you are selling websites, ftp space, storage space etc) Normally you would… [cont.]

A. Best way to upload files using FTP is with an FTP client like filezilla (free download from mozilla.org website). I use it, or I sometimes use the one from freshdevices Connection type is not relevant. FTP itself is just the method to do the transfer The sequence of FTP'ing You connect to the FTP server Logon with the correct name and password Change to the folder where you want to upload/downlod upload or download the file(s) Sign off The cient steps you through this in an easy to understand way
