How to tell the teacher my 1st grader is bored because she knows the lessons?
Q. How do I tell the teacher that my daughter is bored in class. She is already reading and writing at 3rd grade level and she is getting sight words such as: and, the, a, I... Ect. How do I tactfully ask the teacher to give her harder work? She is so bored in class and is starting to act up in class. She loves to learn so her acting up in class is due to her being bored not because of any other reason. She is a very good student when she is challenged. Thanks

A. While the teacher *should* make reasonable accommodations to teach your child at her level... public schools are notorious for forcing children to 'stay with the group'. IE, Advanced children are often scolded for things like reading more than the assigned reading for the night (in a book that is already beneath them). Then it begins as you have said... bored children become restlessly 'naughty' children and the teachers fall even more into the trap of treating them like a 'problem'... punishing instead of offering the level of work they need! I wouldn't worry *too* much about being tactful if you see this cycle beginning. The teacher needs to be working on the *real* problem. So I would talk in a very direct manner with the teacher… [cont.]

What can I do in a plane or car not to get bored?
Q. I'm leaving on the 8th of february by plane (and after that by car) and I don't know what to do not to get bored. I've travelled by plane a lot of times and I always got bored...So...anybody has any ideas??

A. Maybe bring a walkman or mp3 player to give you something to listen to, and if you don't get motion sickness maybe bring a book along, too. I find reading is really good for long trips. Just make sure it's a book you like so you don't get bored with THAT, as well!
